y was the book so popular? What made this story so much more than just another zombie apocalypse novel? Maybe it's because zombies are such a common theme in the genre, and this one takes an interesting twist. Or perhaps it's because we're used to seeing stories about the end of the world told primarily from a human perspective.
It might also be that we like seeing humans overcome adversity and then come out victorious in the end — which is what happens in World War Z. For once, we get to see how humanity would survive against all odds when man himself becomes prey for thousands of bloodthirsty mindless creatures currently roaming across planet Earth.
Written by Max Brooks, World War Z hit the shelves in June 2006 and spent eight consecutive weeks as the #1 bestselling nonfiction book of 2006. It went on to be a New York Times bestseller and was even made into a movie by Warner Brothers, only to be slightly panned by critics and fans alike.
So what exactly makes World War Z such a big deal?
The first thing that comes to mind is the cast of characters, most notably Brad Pitt's portrayal of United Nations employee Gerry Lane . His character is something Hollywood has never seen before - an ordinary man who becomes everything but extraordinary. You can't help but root for him and, even more importantly, you realize that the odds are not all that stacked against humanity.
The second thing is the setting of the novel - World War Z is set in several different parts of the world, including New York City. For those of us who grew up watching movies like The Day After Tomorrow and The Core, we know that sometimes it's not always possible to predict how various climates will affect a situation.
Also unique to this novel is its fantastical element. I don't mean to say that zombies are not real - because if it's not possible for something to be real, what's the point? But you do get a sense of wonder when you read about them; Eric and his companions, for example, realize something is terribly wrong with the world when they come across a group of children who have never seen a man before:
As soon as we walked down the hallway and entered an elevator we felt like we were in some kind of dream. The walls were covered with drawings and sketches. There were pictures of people talking into bombs, people dressed in funny clothes, and bubbles coming out of people's heads... We looked around the room and saw people sitting on couches staring at screens... It was like we had walked in on a movie in the middle of a scene and didn't know what it was about or what we were supposed to do. We just stood there, frozen.
That's pretty neat - especially when you're looking at it from a writing perspective. It's important to make your characters think about things that are not normally on their agenda.
The third thing that makes World War Z so appealing is its narrative tone. There are several events mentioned in the book, but there is nothing overly dramatic about these events... The author uses an extremely matter-of-fact approach that makes describing the end of man's reign on earth seem almost mundane.
